Only 5 of these locomotives were built (by R. Stephenson & Co. in Darlington), but were trustworthy and hard-working engines which served the CR for the remainder of its independent existence. However, in 1923 when the Cambrian was amalgamated with (or taken over by) the GWR, such small fleets stood little chance of survival, so 4 engines were scrapped by 1928, with the last (Cambrian No. 98 / GWR No. 1043) surviving until 1933.
