Original August 29, 1920, typed personal letter from Deming, New Mexico, written on Southern Pacific Lines Form 2552 railroad stationery. The writer, identified only as Malcolm, discusses an upcoming election, tobacco and cotton crops, desert conditions in New Mexico and the availability of beer and whiskey approximately 18 miles away across the Mexican border, describing Mexico as “wide open.” Written during the first year of nationwide Prohibition, the letter provides an interesting firsthand account of railroad-era Southwestern and border life.
