Southern was a leading rail carrier throughout the southeastern US, with tracks extending from Washington (DC), Jacksonville (FL) and New Orleans (LA) north to Cincinnati (OH) and west to Memphis (TN) and St. Louis (MO). Freight revenue and net income below 1974's record levels but still strong. This report summarizes the 1975 financial performance and is oriented towards the coal and energy business. Southern was constructing a large barge-rail coal transloader facility in northwest Alabama, which would provide strong coal traffic growth. It also covers yard improvements and other capital items, microwave and centralized traffic control, sales and marketing efforts, and a major new-town development in Florida.
