The Norfolk & Western Railway Company (N&W) was a major regional railroad serving the Mid-Atlantic and Mid-western areas of the US. The N&W merged with the Southern Railway in 1982 to form a mega-railroad, the Norfolk Southern. In 1999, Norfolk Southern acquired a large portion of the former Conrail system and became one of the two large east-coast railroads. For auction is rule book from the N&W, entitled "Radio Rules"; it is dated August 1, 1977 and details proper procedures for using N&W company radios. It addresses such topics as emergency calls, transmitting false information, repairs, base and wayside stations, mobile units, testing, using radios for train orders, much more. Included is the phonetic alphabet used for message clarity.
