I bought this, and several other railroad tools listed separately, at an estate auction in Philippi, West Virginity. It was listed as a “Specialty Hammer/Adze” but my research suggests it is actually a railroad adze for hewing the tie with a spike driver on the other side. This adze/driver has a 1” hammer head (about the size of a claw hammer head) on one side and 3” adze head on the other. The tool appears to be Forged Iron and includes a newer Knopsnyder handle. The 12” long head has some surface rust but it is solid. The tool weights a little over 5-1/2 pounds and is about 36-1/2” overall in length.
