These heavy-duty kerosene lamps were specifically hung on the sides or the very rear carriage of a train to serve as highly visible end-of-train marker. The side panels feature a bold, geometric red and white diamond/triangle pattern. This acted as a passive day signal, ensuring that even when the oil wick inside wasn't lit, workers and other train crews could easily spot the end of a train or shunting line in daylight.
