After the loss of one set in the Great Heck accident in 2001, the remaining sets were refurbished by Bombardier at Wakefield between 2003 and 2005. They were further refurbished in 2016, before LNER (London North Eastern Railway) took over the InterCity East Coast franchise from Virgin Trains East Coast in June 2018.
