It replaced the ED79 and EH500, which could no longer operate on the Tsugaru Kaikyo Line following the opening of the Hokkaido Shinkansen between Shin-Aomori and Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto. Equipped with an LCX antenna for the Shinkansen-style train radio system, the EH800 features distinctive bulges on both end car bodies.
