LONDON MIDLAND EX MIDLAND RAILWAY - COMPOUND 4-4-0 NO. 1001- # L896

£1.70

The London Midland Railway's Compound No. 1001 is a marvel of engineering, a testament to the ingenuity of its builders back in the early 20th century. This steam locomotive was one of several built for the Midland Railway, which played a vital role in transporting passengers and cargo throughout the industrial heartland of England.

The LMS No. 1001 is a compound steam locomotive, meaning it has multiple cylinders arranged side by side to increase its power output. Its distinctive four-cylinder design gives it a smooth, quiet ride and impressive acceleration. This particular locomotive numbers 896 out of 1001, making it one of the few remaining examples in existence.

Built between 1902 and 1903, No. 1001 was originally allocated to the Birmingham and Midland Railway before joining the London Midland Railway at St. Albans station. Today, this steam locomotive is part of a small collection of surviving LMS locomotives on display at the National Railway Museum in York.
