NORTHERN IRELAND RAILWAYS- DIESEL 103 @ DUBLIN - 1973 - IRISH RAILWAY PHOTO #948

£1.70

Vintage diesel locomotive on display, a rare sight in Northern Ireland railways. The Northern Irish Railway's fleet of diesels played a crucial role in transporting passengers and cargo between Dublin and the rest of the country during its heyday.

In 1973, this particular locomotive, chassis #103, was one of many that operated under the Northern Irish Railway name. It's estimated that over 1,000 diesel units were built for Irish Railways back then, but few remain intact today.

As you can see in this photograph from an unknown source, the locomotive is well-preserved and still retains much of its original charm. The worn wooden signs and faded paintwork give it a nostalgic feel that's hard to find in modern-day railways.

The Northern Irish Railway was one of the country's largest railway operators during World War II, but after the war, passenger services were reduced significantly, leading to the eventual closure of many of their lines. Today, this locomotive stands as a testament to the railway's rich history and the people who built it.
