This is a fine example of the Water Gauge Spanners carried by all Great Western Railway locomotives. Specifically designed for use with the standard water gauges fitted to all GWR locos it has a ring spanner and two sizes of open end spanners and is made of heavy cast steel. Frequently used as an improvised hammer, this example shows the typical dents, knocks and some pitting and other markings that could be expected in all such well used tools. It has been cleaned and lightly oiled and this historic example (which was made before the nationalisation of the railways) can still be used for its original purpose or for display as a typical sample of the standard tools of the locomen of the day.
