Chartered in Pennsylvania in 1846, construction began in 1847, and the first all-rail line reached Pittsburgh in 1852. In the 1860's, the line gained access to Baltimore, and in the 1870s it stretched north to New York City, and eventually connected Chicago with Washington DC.
