Starting in 1962, under the direction of Fiat Grandi Motori, various Italian manufacturers created a total of 29 new diesel-electric machines for the Ferrovie dello Stato FS. The heart of the locomotive was a Diesel engine, produced by Fiat under license based on a Daimler-Benz design, with just under 600 HP of power. The machines were assigned to the depots of Venice, Verona, Genoa and Trieste. While the Genoese and Trieste units mainly carried out shunting services, those of Venice and Verona also carried out light, freight and local trains. In scheduled service, starting from the mid-Seventies, the series was replaced by the more powerful D.345; in shunting services, however, these locomotives remained in full operation until the threshold of the new millennium.
