The class was first used for long-distance express passenger trains on main lines prior to electrification. Then they became a mainstay heavy freight loco, while still working occasional passenger services. This volume is Ian Allan’s reissue of the edition first published in Jane’s ‘Rail Portfolios’ series in 1984.
