After reunification, a number of the robust DR Class 132 (later DBAG Class 232) locomotives were rebuilt to achieve a higher maximum speed of 140 km/h, resulting in the Class 234 designation. The DBAG Class 234 is a high-speed variant of the famous DR Class 130 family of diesel-electric locomotives originally built for the Deutsche Reichsbahn of East Germany and later inherited by Deutsche Bahn AG after German reunification.
