This is an original painting engraved by John Rapkin, illustrated by Henry Bibby and published by The London Printing and Publishing Company (originally issued by John Tallis & Co.) authentic 1851 steel engraving Hung in portswood station ticket office in 1861 and moved to st Denys train station ticket office when the station moved a quarter of a mile south in 1866 hand-colored steel engraving. In the 1850s, master engravers like John Rapkin would meticulously carve these massive map plates out of steel, print them onto heavy paper, and then artists would use watercolor washes to hand-tint the borders and town blocks to make them visually pop for the public.
