The I&FR aspired to become part of a grand trunk route from Glasgow to Inverness, but time and money was squandered battling in Parliament with the rival Highland and North British Railways.In the end, a 24 mile line was built to Fort Augustus, in the midst of Scottish Highlands. It was financial disaster!
