This is a vintage Smiths "Wootton Lantern", a battery-powered lamp utilized by British police and the RAF from the 1920s through the 1940s. It was invented in 1920 by George Wootton, an assistant chief engineer for the Metropolitan Police Service. The lantern features a prominent diamond-shaped metal plate detailing Patent No. 201089/22 and the manufacturer, S. Smith & Sons (MA) Ltd. There is a spare bulb compartment located underneath the main lens. The lamp currently does not work, so should only be bought as a collectible item, rather for actual use.
